Question:
- Do they still offer State of Alaska
Student Loans, that the interest
is - forgiven if you remain in Alaska
after you graduate from college?
How do you - prove such?
Answer:
That'd be nice, but afraid not.
I'm in my final semester of college,
and have been using student loans
the whole time. They do give you
a 6-month (or maybe it's a year
I'd have to look it up) grace period
before you have to start paying
it back after you graduate. I think
the interest rate is a little over
8%.
I think the
only benefit of living in Alaska
though is that you get the resident
college costs, instead of the WAY
more expensive non-resident costs
no, they ended that part of the
loan program back in 1986 or '87.
that's why i didn't get the student
loans after my first two years with
the program. you didn't have to
prove it, but you did have to file
a forgiveness application every
year that was similar to the PFD
application, and they did spot audits.
lying would make you liable
for repayment of the entire amount
with full interest, plus a hefty
fine. but it was sure nice to pay
that half of my loan in just 5 years!
I worked
my way through school 40 to 48 hours
a week the old fashion way back
when men were men and girls were
girls. The Alaska student
loan program is just another way
of funding the U of A.
If they would
teach instead of funding an over
bureacraptic administration at the
U of A they might be able to attract
enough paying students to support
themselves. I would like to
see the program abolished. Then
U of A then might get back to basics
instead of being a welfare case
providing education to welfare cases.
I hear it was nice while it lasted,
though. "Forgiveness
was a feature of the Alaska Student
Loan Program before July 1, 1987.
In order to get forgiveness, a borrower
was required to complete their degree
or certificate program and remain
an Alaska resident. For every year
of continued Alaska residency, after
the second year, 10 percent of the
amount they borrowed was credited
to their balance and reduced the
amount they had to repay, up to
50 percent. Forgiveness is still
included in the Alaska Teacher Scholarship
Loan Program and the Michael Murphy
Memorial Scholarship Loan, and is
a benefit on Winn Brindle Memorial
Scholarship Loans for the 1995-96
school year or later. Since the
forgiveness benefits vary on all
these programs, we suggest you call
us on the toll free number for further
details or to request a forgiveness
application form: (800) 441-2962."
