Question:
Im a Senior in High School this
year, and was just recently accepted
to the School of Visual Arts in
NYC. The cost of everything piled
together (tuition, books, room and
board, etc..) comes to about 12,000
a semester. I'm really struggling
trying to find a way to pay for
it. My EFC is around $3,500 I believe.
Problem is,
my parents say that they cant afford
to pay ANYTHING and also refuse
to co-sign on a loan for me and
have even suggested choosing not
to go to college period. NOT an
option in my book. So I guess that
leaves it up to me on how to get
the rest of the money for my school.
Ive looked at a lot of options,
but I'm running out of time. I've
started looking into loans, mostly
alternative loans because the school
I'm going to is so expensive, and
I'd like to know if theres a loan
that a student can take out in their
own name without a co-signer.
Thats my major
question, and my second question
is: Do they have a loan that can
cover registration and dorm deposit
fees? I have to come up with 1000
dollars in about 3 weeks and I have
no idea what I'm going to do. Keep
in mind I'm totally alone in this,
not to mention 17 years old and
not a legal adult till fall semster
starts. Finding a loan seems impossible
so far. I'm alone in this endeavor,
so anything that requires a co-signer
or anything like that is unfortunately
not an option.

Considering
the very short time schedule you
are on, there really is only one
practical avenue: Immediately call
the Director of Financial Aid at
SVA to explain your situation and
ask for help, advice and guidance.

At the same
time, I'd be working on alternative
plans (other less expensive colleges,
probably state schools) in case
SVA turns out to be financially
impossible. Steven B. Blank College
